  What is Thermo-CD ?

  • Thermo-CD is an interactive multimedia program
  • Thermo-CD was designed as a textbook replacement for an introductory course in engineering thermodynamics

  Who should try Thermo-CD ?

  • Students who are or will be enrolling in an introductory course in engineering thermodynamics
    • You might learn something.
  • Instructors of introductory engineering thermodynamics courses
    • Thermo-CD has an outstanding solutions manual. It includes Excel spreadsheet solutions for all homework problems as well as Adobe PDF solutions that can be printed or posted to your course website.
    • Click here to obtain a complimentary copy of Thermo-CD on CD-ROM and the Instructor's CD.
    • Click here to select Thermo-CD as the text for your course.

  How does Thermo-CD work ?

  • You can run Thermo-CD by clicking the "Launch TCD" button on this page.
  • The Macromedia Authorware 6.0 plug-in is required to run Thermo-CD.
    • You can obtain this plug-in for free by clicking the "Get AW Plug-In" button on this page.

What makes Thermo-CD better than a textbook ?

  • Reading is not the main way that information is presented in Thermo-CD.
    • Each page in Thermo-CD includes a 1 to 3 minute mini-lecture.
    • A typical page shows a group of equations, graphs and calculations with a brief explanation of each.
    • The mini-lecture explains the information on the page, why it is important and useful and how it fits into the broad scheme of thermodynamics.
    • Many students learn better when when concepts and techniques are explained to them while they are viewing the related information.
    • Students can replay the mini-lectures as many times as they like until they fully understand a point.
  • The information presented on the pages of Thermo-CD is animated and interactive.
    • Thermo-CD is more of an active learning experience than a textbook.
    • Active learning is generally more effective and more enjoyable for engineering students.
  • Thermo-CD includes more than 50 example problems
    • Each example problem is solved in great detail
    • A mini-lecture explains the reasoning behind each step in the solution process
    • All calculations are presented.
  • Each of the more than 50 lessons in Thermo-CD concludes with a quiz.
    • Quizzes let students make sure they understood the material in the lesson before they move on.
    • Quizzes include problems as well as multiple choice, short answer and drag-and-drop questions.
    • Quiz Problems
      • There is at least one Quiz Problem in most quizzes
      • Quiz Problems are comparable in length and difficulty to example or homework problems.
      • Quiz Problems prompt the student for intermediate results that help lead the student to the correct solution.
      • Student answers are evaluated in real time and a score is provided as feedback.
      • Upon completion of a problem the student can view the solution which is presented in the same format as an example problem. This essentially doubles the number of solved problems that are available to the student
  • Thermo-CD includes special features.
    • Hyperlinked Bookmarks
      • The student can bookmark any page in Thermo-CD. The student can add a short note to each bookmark.
      • The last page that a student viewed is automatically added to his/her list of bookmarks.
      • Her/His list of bookmarks can be accessed from any page in Thermo-CD.
      • The list provides hyerlinks back to any bookmarked page.
      • The list can be organized and edited.
      • The list can be stored on a floppy disk for portability.
    • Hyperlinked Glossary
      • Every new term in the text is defined in the glossary.
      • The glossary can be accessed from any page in Thermo-CD.
      • Each glossary entry includes a hyperlink to the page on which the term was first introduced.
    • First-Aid Kits
      • Each chapter includes a First-Aid Kit.
      • A typical First-Aid Kit might contain the following items:
        • Chapter Summary: a detailed outline of the chapter (1-3 pages)
        • Key Equations: most of the equations needed to solve homework problems (1 page)
        • Tables and Figures: useful data from the chapter
        • Excel spreadsheet solutions for all of the example and quiz problem
    • Excel Add-In
      • Special functions provide internationally accepted values for the thermodynamic properties of water.
      • Property functions for ammonia and R-134.
      • Custom functions developed to help students use Excel to solve engineering problem
